Important Heatstroke Prevention Safety Precautions for Visitors

Temperatures have been consistently high across Japan in recent days, and heatstroke alerts have been issued. When visiting the islands of Naoshima, Teshima, and Inujima, please adopt the necessary safety precautions to prevent heatstroke. The measures include using umbrellas and hats, keeping yourself well hydrated, and taking breaks before you feel tired.

Please be aware that facilities for buying drinks, rest areas, and medical facilities on the islands are limited.

For visitors to Naoshima

Keeping yourself hydrated

  • - You can find vending machines and stores that sell drinks in the surrounding areas of Miyanoura Port and Honmura Port.
  • - You can find water supply points at the foot of the slope to the Benesse House Museum and in front of the bus stop.
  • - You can buy drinks at the Chichu Art Museum Ticket Center Shop, Chichu Cafe, Lee Ufan Museum Store, Benesse House Shop, and Benesse House Museum Shop.
  • - You can buy drinks at the Naoshima bath "I♥湯," but water is not available. You can find vending machines that sell drinks in the surrounding area.

Getting around the island

  • - The route from Miyanoura Port to the Chichu Art Museum has many uphill slopes with little shade. Please be careful of heatstroke when traveling on foot or by bicycle.
  • - Please feel free to use the free Benesse House area shuttle bus service that operates within the Benesse House area (Tsutsuji-so - Benesse House Museum - Lee Ufan Museum - Chichu Art Museum).

Rest areas

  • - Admission to the Naoshima Plan "The Water" is free. Eating and drinking is allowed in some areas.
  • - You can find a rest area at the Honmura Lounge & Archive. You can also buy tea, sports drinks, and other drinks here and consume any drinks purchased in the rest area within the facility.

Safety precautions for the prevention of heatstroke

  • - Cooling mist is set up at the foot of the slope to the Benesse House Museum and in the Valley Gallery.
  • - Visitors with reservations for Art House Project "Kinza" may borrow umbrellas for free when there is a waiting time to enter the facility.
  • - Please watch out for dizziness (a symptom of dehydration) at the Naoshima bath "I♥湯".

For visitors to Teshima

Keeping yourself hydrated

  • - There are few vending machines and stores that sell drinks outside of the surrounding areas of Ieura Port and Karato Port. We recommend buying drinks there before touring the island.
  • - You can buy drinks at the Teshima Art Museum Ticket Center, Teshima Art Museum Café&Shop and Les Archives du Cœur.

Getting around the island

  • - The routes from Ieura Port to various facilities have many steep uphill and downhill slopes with little shade. Please be careful of heatstroke when traveling on foot or bicycle.
  • - Please note that there are few shuttle buses on the island, and they have limited capacity. There is no shade at the bus stops.
  • - Island residents have priority to board the shuttle bus. Please be considerate and give way to island residents.

For visitors to Inujima

Keeping yourself hydrated

  • - There are few places to buy drinks on the island. We recommend buying drinks before touring the island.
  • - You can buy drinks at the Inujima Ticket Center and the Inujima Seirensho Art Museum.

Getting around the island

  • - The only way to get around the island is on foot. We recommend wearing a comfortable outfit for walking around and using an umbrella or a hat.
  • - There is little shade on the island. Please take breaks as necessary when viewing the artworks.
