Lee Ufan Museum's latest work Porte vers l'infini unveiled to Naoshima Residents
The sculpture Porte vers l'infini (2019) by artist Lee Ufan was unveiled to the residents of Naoshima ahead of its public opening. The event was held in the plaza area of the Lee Ufan Museum on Wednesday, July 17th, 2019.
At the event, Lee Ufan explained that every time someone passes through the gate, they can see the sky, feel the touch of the refreshing sea, or view the mountains in a whole new way. It evokes a variety of sensations. That's what inspired the name Porte vers l'infini. He mentions that there is no need to think deeply about the meaning of the work. Rather, he prefers to have the viewers experience something new every time they pass through it. Lee hopes that it becomes a work treasured by the locals.
Shinichi Kobayashi, the mayor of Naoshima, stated that since the work was made on lush nature, surrounded by green grass and mountains, he hopes that everyone can come together and continue to cherish the sculpture. Over 100 residents gathered at the event. Some passed under the arch with their eyes on the sky, some gazed at the scenery framed by it. The attendees thoroughly enjoyed the latest addition to Naoshima's Kuraura area.
Porte vers l'infini opened to the public on Friday, July 19th, 2019. Come pass through this unique arch for yourself to see what you experience.
