Art Dialog in the Room: Engaging with Art Through Dialogue
Since 2010, Benesse Art Site Naoshima has offered a dialogue-based art appreciation program, an approach that encourages participants to engage with artworks through conversation. Rather than focusing on finding the "right" answer, participants spend time observing a single work and responding to questions such as, "What do you notice?" and "What makes you think that?" Through sharing their thoughts and listening to others, they explore different perspectives, deepen their thinking, and allow their ideas to expand freely.

To make this experience more accessible to guests during their stay, Benesse House introduced Art Dialog in the Room in April 2023, a self-guided art appreciation tool that can be enjoyed in the comfort of the guest room. Each of the 65 guest rooms at Benesse House features its own unique artwork. Guests can access Art Dialog in the Room by scanning a QR code provided in the room with their smartphone or tablet. A series of questions then guides them through the artwork, asking, for example, "Where do you most enjoy viewing this work from?" or "What emotions does it evoke for you?" As guests reflect on the artwork, they are free to move around the room, change their viewpoint, or engage in conversation with their travel companions. There is no correct answer; the experience invites each guest to discover their own interpretation. Once they have completed their responses, guests can also read comments left by previous participants. Since comments are available for artworks in all room types, it can be fascinating to compare perspectives from guests who stayed in the same room or to imagine artworks displayed in other rooms through the impressions shared by others. To mark the launch of Art Dialog in the Room, Benesse Art Site Naoshima held trial sessions for staff members. Even for those who work at the hotel every day, taking time to closely observe the artworks displayed in the guest rooms proved to be a refreshing and inspiring experience.

At Benesse Art Site Naoshima, we value experiences that encourage visitors to reflect on what "Benesse" - living well - means to them personally. Many visitors tell us that they are interested in art but are unsure how to approach contemporary artworks. In reality, there is no single correct way to view art and no predetermined answer to be found. By spending time with an artwork and following your own thoughts, you may discover a new perspective, encounter a new side of yourself, and arrive at an answer that is uniquely your own. The same artwork can feel entirely different depending on the season, the time of day, or even your mood at that particular moment. We hope that the experience of engaging with art in your guest room will enrich not only your stay at Benesse House, but also future visits to museums and galleries long after your journey has ended. Through Art Dialog in the Room, we hope your encounter with art becomes even more meaningful, personal, and rewarding.
